Smallmouth Bass Fishing on the Niagara River
A sure sign of spring besides warmer temperatures is the annual spawning of Lake Erie’s world famous smallmouth bass. Late April throughout June the Buffalo Outer Harbor located right outside of Buffalo NY is home to some of the biggest smallmouth bass. They come into the shallows of Lake Erie, and The Niagara River to feed and spawn.
Smallmouth Bass are native to Lake Erie, and Lake Ontario along with The Niagara River. They can be plentiful, and put up an excellent fight. Guiding for these species is a lot of fun. Days when Lake Erie is calm, we can go out to the depths, and target them on bolder piles. The Niagara River in the spring, and late summer are unmatched for smallmouth bass fishing. Using soft plastics, drop shots, and dragging live bait gets the heart pounding either way. Our smallmouth bass average around three to five pounds, with a lot of fish in the two to two and half pound range.
